12 Things to do After Installing Ubuntu 12.10

1) Update

You have got new ubuntu doesn’t mean you have all the latest updates to things you need. So first of all update it:

 sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

2) Ubuntu Tweak

Ubuntu Tweak is a must have application for Ubuntu , it is an application to config Ubuntu easier for everyone. It provides many useful desktop and system options that the default desktop environment doesn’t provide. There are quite handful of things which you can do with ubuntu tweak from changing window icons from left to right and so on.

Install Ubuntu Tweak via PPA:

Open terminal and enter the following command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

3) Your Desktop Environment Choice

Ubuntu has chosen Unity as default desktop environment option and many of us (including me) don’t like this unity etiquette. We have been watching this fight between two teams for quite long. Lets not indulge into that and leave it to the users to choose what they want to use on their ease. Here are some alternatives a non-unity guy can choose from after a tweak for unity-lovers.

For Unity Lovers

MyUnity is a must have configuration tool for Unity ( change themes, icons, transparency…).
Open software centre and search for “MyUnity”, click install and you are done.

To intsll via ppa:

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:myunity/ppa
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install myunity

For Unity Haters:

Get another Desktop Environment -

a) Lightweight weight desktop environment : XFCE

To install xfce desktop environment, simply execute -

sudo apt-get install xfce4

b) Installing KDE Desktop environment

To KDE desktop, execute the command (it will standard the minimal set of apps, you could also choose standard or full edition)

sudo apt-get install kde-plasma-desktop

c) GNOME 2 style desktop :

GNOME3 fallback session, Cinnamon, MATE
Install GNOME3 fallback session

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
sudo apt-get install indicator-applet-appmenu

d) Install MATE Desktop

sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu quantal main”
sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/ubuntu quantal main”
sudo apt-get install mate-archive-keyring
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-core
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

e) Installing Cinnamon Desktop

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable

sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Okie, that was all about DE kung fu. Now lets get back into our real task of getting thing for our new ubuntu ;) . Lets get some beauty!

Thanks for the list. Well btw, myunity should be out of the list because they’re not available for Quantal at the moment. However, there’s a problem while adding ubuntu-tweak ppa for me, the sources update gave me the hash sum error.
